Andrea Mennillo is deeply involved with MAGIS (Movimento e Azione dei Gesuiti Italiani per lo Sviluppo), a foundation in Italy that coordinates Jesuit missionary initiatives around the world.
In addition to serving as MAGIS’ auditor, Andrea has also been a driving force in the foundation to launch Una Sfida al Deserto (“A Challenge to the Desert”), an ambitious project designed to support cultural development, promote health and education, and spur socioeconomic growth.
This MAGIS-backed initiative has focused specifically on supporting agricultural development in Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West Africa that is the third poorest in the world according to the United Nations. So far the project has helped to build 100 water wells in Dissin, a dam in Roumtenga, and an agricultural school in Lebda that was named in memory of Andrea’s father, Domenico Mennillo.
Some 250 Burkinabé students between 12 and 17 years old are enrolled at the school.
